i actually let out a tiny scream of joy
The Valais Blacknose sheep (pictured adorably above) is a breed of domestic sheep originating in the Valais region. It is a coarse-wooled (i.e. mattress, mixed or carpet) breed from Switzerland kept primarily for meat.
While many Americans uphold the cognitive dissonance of abstaining from meat that comes from animals they deem “cute”, “loyal” or otherwise special/different but eating animals they deem “ugly”, “boring”, “slow” etc., it seems that European consumers are a little less concerned with animal appearances.
It should not matter to the animal consumer whether it is the “tiny scream of joy” inducing sheep pictured above or the cow, chicken, fish, or turkey on their plate. The question of how we make this clear to consumers, how we destroy the arbitrary boundaries between “aw cute let’s save them and snuggle them” vs. “food item”, still needs to be answered.
